When Glittery Dreams Don’t Turn to Gold
August 23, 2025
Having a spiritual business is the life dream of many, but is it right for you? Sometimes you have to take a leap of faith and find out – even if it’s not your ultimate destination, it might lead you to where you need to be, as happened to me with yoga teaching. The Virgo way is to get as knowledgeable as you can about your dream path. Here are some unexpected and unspoken truths you must know before you start your journey.
It was not only the twelve to sixteen daily working hours that exhausted me in my tech job. Toxic intrigues, aggressive work dynamics, and heavy responsibility, which resulted in nightmares, were all a part of it.
Yoga classes became my source of happiness. Twice a week, for 1.5 hours, I’d put the tensions and worries of my job aside and cultivate inner peace.
It was natural then that I started envying my yoga teacher for having his cool job. He was free to live his life as he wanted, and he helped people like me find a profound spiritual and physical connection. It seemed a much more valuable contribution to the world than making one company’s financial systems run smoothly.
When my grandfather passed away, he left me some money, which I decided to use to take a year off and write my dream book.
But writing turned out to be much harder than I’d thought. Although I had a general idea of the book, I lacked the necessary skills, knowledge, and talent to make it work. I would find myself bored by my writing, looking for ways to distract myself. This is why, when my teacher announced his yoga teacher training, I was the first to sign up.
Even before my training was complete, I became my teacher’s assistant and then his partner in a yoga studio, where I met my new teacher, Maty Ezraty, and became her assistant. In a few years, I was featured on national TV shows and appeared in some prestigious magazines.
But. There were some very big buts. The first one was that I was physically drained. I would come back home late at night and could barely walk up the stairs to my 3rd-floor apartment.
The second was that, even though I was much more fulfilled at work, I still struggled with melancholy.
The third problem was that I earned less than a quarter of what I’d made in my tech career. Changes in my lifestyle have allowed me to live with less, but traveling for my international yoga gigs was expensive.
Lastly, the one thing I’d never been willing to admit to anyone was that teaching yoga became boring. I would find myself teaching on autopilot, not always paying attention to what I was saying. I would ask myself how many times I would be able to say “chaturanga, upward-facing dog, downward-facing dog.”
It took a few more years before I found my true calling and initiated my astrology business.
I am not saying that yoga teaching and writing are not great career paths, or that they might not be your life’s purpose. I’ve never given up on my dream of becoming a writer, and here I am, writing my first book fifteen years after my first trial. Yoga teaching wasn’t for me, but it surely served me on my path towards astrology and my new book.
But not every dream that glitters turns into gold. Many people I meet today dream of a spiritual career, such as becoming an astrologer or a life coach. These professions are more suitable for people of all ages than teaching yoga. They pay better than yoga teaching, and are not physically demanding. But there are lots of buts here, too, and you must be aware of them.
It infuriates me when I see ads featuring women relaxing in a luxurious setting by a magical lake, casually dipping their feet in the water, telling us their coaching business generates millions of dollars a year. I am sorry to tell you – this is a scam.
The truth is, there are very few people who actually make good money as astrologers and coaches. It took me more than three years to make a decent five-figure income. I had to take many risks and invest a significant amount of money in marketing. If it hadn’t been for my husband’s financial support, I wouldn’t have been able to make it.
I don’t aim to discourage you – on the contrary! Helping you dream big and embrace your desires is what I am aiming for. If you were meant to become a coach or an astrologer, then you will be supported on this path.
The universe always supports you in fulfilling your purpose, so your fulfillment is always attainable. But it’s also helpful to remember that what’s not attainable isn’t your purpose.
Being knowledgeable and grounded about your choices is as valuable as dreaming big – this is the Virgo way. You need to know what you’re getting into and whether you have the personality and necessary resources to succeed.
If you dream of a career that doesn’t align with your personality and resources, you’ll likely never fulfill your dream, or, if you do, your dream will turn into a nightmare of anxiety, frustration, and financial struggle.
Here are some things to review before you decide on establishing a spiritual business:
- Do you have a financial safety net to provide for your needs in the initial years of building your business?
- What are your resources for investing in your business?
- Do you know how to manage a business, create a business plan, and work with a budget?
- Do you know how much someone in your dream position who matches your age and personality type makes?
- Do you enjoy being on social media to promote yourself? Or do you have a strong connection with your local community where you can offer your services and promote yourself? If not, how do you plan to get your clients?
- Do you have the discipline required to go through months of feeling like a total failure, but still continue to move forward, trust yourself, and believe that you are aligned with your purpose?
If, after reviewing these questions, you feel confident and supported in initiating your path, I wish you the best of luck, and I am always here to support you.
If, however, you realize that a spiritual business might not be a good fit, I promise you that you can utilize your skills in a way that will make you feel fulfilled and provide the financial abundance you seek. It might not be the trendy thing everybody wants to be right now, and surely not the false dreams presented to you on Instagram. But it will be wonderful and delightful nevertheless!
I’d love to hear your thoughts,
Have a wonderful week,
With love,
Yael
